ANCESTRAL PICTURE AND INNOVATION

THE ART OF MIMMA PALADINO

Mimmo Paladino is undoubtedly one of the most important figures in the contemporary Italian art scene, whose pictorial and sculptural research is distinguished by a language that masterfully blends the figurative tradition with visionary innovations.
A prominent exponent of Transavant-garde, Paladino is an artist who has been able to renew the pictorial landscape through a language rich in cultural and iconographic references.
Born in a period of great transformation of Italian art, Paladino helped define a movement that rejected conceptual art and the rigidity of abstraction, rediscovering instead humanity, figuration and memory.
His pictorial universe, made up of simplified and stylized forms, therefore represents a reflection on time and identity, a research on the origins of art and civilization; Although permeated by archaic language, they are never static but refer to a society that needs to find its place in the world.
The works that the artist made between 2006 and 2015, presented in this exhibition, are a perfect example of this fusion of styles and influences, but also of an art capable of maintaining a strong bond with the past, while projecting towards a future that is constantly evolving.
One of the most fascinating aspects of Paladin’s work is the use of archetypal symbols, which refer to a collective memory linked to Mediterranean culture and art history. These signs and references are reworked and transformed into an abstract language. The presence of mythological, religious and historical reasons, while maintaining a certain sacredness, is never limited to mere citation, but becomes an instrument for a deeper investigation into human existence, mystery and spirituality.
The art of Mimmo Paladino is not only an aesthetic reflection on the past, but a real investigation into the human condition; an invitation to look beyond the surface of things and to discover the profound meaning that lies behind every symbol, every form. His works, full of visual energy and memory, offer us a starting point for reflection on our identity and our link with the past.
In Paladin, abstraction is never an end in itself, but a means to build dreamlike and visionary worlds, where the human, animal or symbolic figure, while maintaining its own recognizable identity, merges into a context that challenges logic and time. His painting is not only a representation, but an invitation to enter another dimension, an invitation to dream and reflect.
His canvases are characterized by the use of bright and pure colors, which serve as the background to stylized figures, human representations that often take on the appearance of heads or mysterious symbols of an archaic and universal humanity. These figures, although in their apparent simplicity, seem to enclose a visual alphabet to be deciphered, a code that refers to an ancestral culture and ancient knowledge. His compositions recall early Christian art, Etruscan art and the traditions of primitive cultures, without ever falling into pure citationism. Paladino's iconographic richness thus becomes a visual journey through different eras, places and cultures, creating a new pictorial language but at the same time full of historical memory.
A fundamental role in this iconographic development was played by the travels that the artist made in the 1980s, particularly in South America, where he was deeply influenced by local cultures. The experiences lived in those lands enriched his symbolic repertoire, imprinting in his painting a sense of spirituality and connection with the deepest roots of humanity. Paladin's painting thus becomes a kind of universal language that communicates through primitive symbols and forms, but which at the same time opens to the possibility of being interpreted in different ways, depending on individual sensibility and historical knowledge.
Ultimately, Mimmo Paladino is an artist who has been able to combine tradition and innovation in a unique and original way, proposing a vision of art that is at the same time intimate and universal, ancient and modern, concrete and visionary. His ability to mix symbolism, emotion and formal research makes him one of the most influential and appreciated artists of the contemporary scene.
